A Series Of Projects For Tesla Solar Electricity Helping Residents On The Storm Battered Island.
What do you do when a hurricane destroys a countries entire energy and water infrastructure? This is the case for residents of Puerto Rico after the storms of 2017 leveled the most of the island. To rebuild the electricity grid and distribution system will require millions if not billions of dollars and significant delays in construction.
This is where solar electricity technology combined with battery storage systems can step in and shine. Solar panels and batteries designed for specific locations ( distributed ), can implemented much faster than an entire grid and large scale electric power plant (s). These systems are cheaper than grid connection but still components and labor cost money and someone needs to pay the bills.
In a move that surprised many politicians and industry leaders, Elon Musk has focused his innovative clean energy and electric car company, Tesla at helping the situation.
The Tesla solar electricity is for now free to the hospital, until such time as a power purchase agreement can be arranged and the hospital has the means to pay for the power.
This should stand as a warning or lesson to conventional electricity providers and utilities that are still struggling to bring power to millions of residents. That lesson is that there is no existing electric grid, solar electricity technology is the most cost effective and expedient solution.
San Juan’s Hospital del Nino serves some 3,000 children on the island, with three dozen critically ill patients who need around-the-clock care.
In a viral Instagram post, Musk explained,
Hospital del Niño (Children’s Hospital) is the first of many solar+battery Tesla projects going live in Puerto Rico. Glad to help support the recovery.
Congratulations to the Tesla team for working 24/7 to make this happen as fast as possible
